Transport Minister Orders Acceleration of Key Infrastructure Projects

Bangkok: Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has mandated all relevant agencies to push forward with significant infrastructure projects, emphasizing the need for swift budget disbursement to meet strategic targets. The Department of Highways and the Department of Rural Roads have been instructed to assess accident-prone areas and expedite the high-speed rail project between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, where civil works have reached 43.79% completion.

According to Thai News Agency, at the 2nd/2025 meeting of the Committee for the Promotion and Monitoring of the Implementation of Important Projects, Mr. Suriya highlighted the acceleration of 2025 budget disbursement, the implementation of safety measures for the Songkran Festival, and preparation for potential public transport disruptions due to emergencies. He underscored the importance of enhancing the country’s transport infrastructure to foster economic growth and improve public access across all regions.

As of May 2025, the Ministry of Transport had disbursed 40,593.25 million baht, representing 85.69% of the 47,373.50 million baht budget. The investment budget disbursement stood at 93,000.54 million baht or 43.82%. Out of 326 new binding contracts worth 24,184.65 million baht, 67 had been signed by May, with plans to finalize 79.45% by June and all contracts by August 2025. This budgetary commitment aims to stimulate the economy, create employment, and improve citizens’ quality of life. Transparency remains a critical component of project execution.

Mr. Suriya also addressed the results of safety measures implemented during the Songkran Festival, noting repeated accidents in certain areas. Consequently, he directed the DOH and DRR to enhance road safety, install speed bumps, improve traffic lane visibility, and upgrade safety equipment and lighting. Agencies were also tasked to prepare for blackout scenarios that may disrupt public transport services, ensuring public safety is prioritized.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the high-speed rail project from Bangkok to Nong Khai, with the first phase from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima achieving 43.79% in civil works. Other phases and projects, such as the Phuket Expressway, Chalong Rat Expressway, and the Intercity Motorway, are under Cabinet consideration.

Further proposals include the procurement of new railcars and locomotives, adjustments to the Red Line Commuter Train Project, and the provision of warehouse services at Suvarnabhumi Airport. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing Thailand’s transportation infrastructure and operational efficiency.
