Istanbul: Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has signed a contract with Indonesian defence firms PT Dirgantara Indonesia and PT Republik Aero Dirgantara for the export of 48 KAAN fighter jets, officials announced on Friday. The agreement was finalized during Trkiye’s International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) held in Istanbul and includes collaboration in production, engineering, and technology transfer. The deliveries are scheduled to be completed within 120 months, with the engines to be manufactured in Trkiye. Defence Industries President Haluk Gorgun highlighted the significance of the deal, noting that it follows a government-to-government framework established in June, marking a pivotal moment in the defence relations between the two nations.
According to TRTworld.com, Gorgun expressed his gratitude and pride in witnessing the agreement’s realization, emphasizing the rapid progress and belief in the capabilities of the involved parties. He pointed out that only four countries have built such fighter jets and that some consortiums are still attempting to do so, with expected first flights not anticipated until 2035-2040. This, he noted, underscores Trkiye’s swift advancement and commitment to the project.
Additionally, Demiroglu mentioned that a supply deal for Trkiye’s Hurjet jet trainer with Spain is anticipated later this year, following a memorandum of understanding signed in May. He also noted Indonesia’s potential and expressed optimism about opportunities in the Gulf countries.
