Tropical Storm Wipha Prompts Urgent Response from Thai Transport Authorities

Bangkok: In response to the significant impact of Tropical Storm Wipha, which has resulted in flash floods across multiple regions in Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit has instructed several key agencies to deliver rapid assistance to affected communities. The Department of Highways, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Transport, Airports of Thailand, and Transport Company have been mobilized to address the challenges posed by the storm, particularly in the northern areas.

According to Thai News Agency, Suriya has directed the Department of Highways (DOH) to dispatch officers to five provinces-Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Phrae, and Tak-where 27 routes have been affected. Of these, 13 remain passable while 14 are currently not. Efforts are underway to restore these routes swiftly, with monitoring occurring around the clock. Warning and advisory signs are being placed strategically to guide travelers. The Department of Rural Roads (DOR) has also been tasked with deploying machinery and manpower to six provinces, addressing 35 affected routes, 13 passable and 22 impassable, to facilitate the resumption of normal traffic flow.

The initiative underscores the necessity of providing alternate routes and conducting immediate repairs on damaged roads and bridges to ensure temporary accessibility. Essential supplies such as food and water are being distributed to those stranded by the conditions.

In the aviation sector, Suriya has mandated the Department of Airports (DoA) and Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) to support the affected populace. This includes clearing water pipes, checking rescue equipment, and ensuring communication with airport users. Facilities such as mobile charging stations and transportation to and from accommodation are being provided at Phrae Airport, which has also opened its parking facilities for those impacted.

AOT has made provisions for free parking from July 21-26, 2025, and has established coordination centers to facilitate assistance. Measures to prevent flooding at airports include the installation of rain gauges, removal of potential obstructions, and preparation of water pumps.

For land transport, Suriya has instructed the Transport Company Limited (BKS) to assess and suspend risky routes. Safety remains paramount, with two bus routes-Bangkok to Thung Chang and Bangkok to Nan-temporarily halted due to flooding at the Phrae bus station. Alternative arrangements have been made for ticketing and passenger services, and passengers have the option to return or reschedule their tickets.
