Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, acting as Prime Minister, has ordered the removal of the Ubon Ratchathani governor due to administrative deficiencies in managing border relief funds. The governor was found responsible for disbursing only 55,600 baht in compensation funds for the Thai-Cambodian border, significantly lower than the required amount.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham highlighted the issue during the program “In-depth Thailand: Insight Thailand.” The governor had previously faced controversy for the disbursement of funds for Buddhist Lent candles. This incident prompted Mr. Phumtham to instruct an increase in the budget to 100 million baht to provide immediate assistance. Deputy Minister of Interior Ms. Thirat Samretwanich had also addressed the budget management issue earlier.
Mr. Phumtham explained that caution was exercised to avoid accusations of harassment when transferring officials, especially those from influential provinces. An investigation was ordered after it was discovered that Ubon Ratchathani’s disbursement was over 55,600 baht, while other areas had significantly lower amounts. Upon reviewing the situation, it was determined that there was a management flaw, leading to the decision to have the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior transfer the governor and appoint the local Inspector General as a replacement.
The government apologized for any inconvenience caused and clarified that the central government had extended the budget by 100 million baht, yet the implementation was not effectively carried out. Mr. Phumtham stated it was necessary to reassess the situation and establish guidelines moving forward.
