Mukdahan: “Uncle Phon” has been taken into custody and is currently being held in Mukdahan Prison while awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court regarding his bail application. This follows the Appeals Court’s decision to sentence him to 26 years in prison in connection with the high-profile Nong Chompoo case.
According to Thai News Agency, “Uncle Phon” was sentenced by the Court of Appeal Region 4 for crimes including the intentional killing of a child, abduction of a minor, and concealment of a corpse. However, “Aunt Taen,” another individual involved in the case, had her charges dismissed in the murder trial of Nong Chompoo. Following the Appeals Court’s verdict, “Uncle Phon” filed a request for bail, which was subsequently submitted to the Supreme Court by the Mukdahan Provincial Court. As of the latest updates, the Supreme Court has not yet issued a decision regarding the bail, resulting in “Uncle Phon’s” continued detention at Mukdahan Provincial Prison.
The case dates back to May 11, 2020, when 3-year-old Nong Chompoo disappeared from her home in Kok Kok Village. Despite extensive search efforts by more than 200 villagers, including “Uncle Phon,” she was tragically found dead on the evening of May 14 at Phu Lek Fai, located about 2 kilometers from her home. Investigations conducted by both Police Region 4 and the Royal Thai Police spanned over a year. Subsequently, on June 1, 2021, arrest warrants were issued for Mr. Chaiphon, known as “Uncle Phon,” and Mrs. Somporn, Nong Chompoo’s aunt, who were believed to be implicated in her untimely death.
