United in grief over Cianjur quake: police chief

Indonesian society is united in grief over the situation in Cianjur, West Java, which was jolted by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Monday (November 21, 2022), National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, said on Tuesday.

“We are doing as much as possible to help the people affected by the disaster; this earthquake (incident) is our grief,” he remarked after visiting the quake victims at Sayang General Hospital here.

The National Police have deployed one thousand police officers to assist in the Cianjur earthquake disaster response, he informed.

The police have also built public kitchens at several points and prepared police health workers to work with regional hospitals to help treat the injured. “Everyone has to work together,” he said.

Based on his visit to Sayang Hospital, he observed that some earthquake victims need surgery as soon as possible. However, due to the precarious condition of the building, surgical operations are being carried out at a Bhayangkara (police-owned) hospital.

“Of course, all hospitals owned by the TNI (Indonesian Military), private hospitals, and general hospitals are ready to work together. The important thing is how to get the patients to be treated properly, especially those whose condition is critical,” he added.

He further said that the police force has prepared trauma-healing activities for earthquake survivors, especially children.

“The National Police has deployed a team to carry out trauma healing at evacuation camps and hospitals to provide motivation and solace in this disaster situation,” he informed.

To reduce the potential for crime, police officials are carrying out special patrols at the homes of residents who have been evacuated.

According to the head of public relations of the National Police, Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo, General Prabowo and the head of Bhayangkari (National Police Wives Organization), Julianti Sigit Prabowo, left from Jakarta by helicopter to Cianjur at 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, most of the quake-injured were provided treatment at Sayang Hospital in Cianjur.
