Bangkok: Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the House over the past year, noting its stability. He outlined plans to draft constitutional amendments in the upcoming session while considering extraordinary sessions if urgent matters arise. Additionally, he will address pending issues in the Ethics Committee during the session recess.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor assessed the House’s performance as “good” based on evaluations by the Parliamentary Civil Service Commission. He emphasized the need for continuous improvement to achieve a “very good” level. The House successfully maintained quorum throughout the year, allowing smooth proceedings and demonstrating the members’ dedication to serving the public interest.
Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor highlighted that political differences are inherent, but collaboration in the House meetings has been beneficial. Regarding constitutional
amendments, he stated that the process would follow legal procedures and involve early consideration in the next session. This includes several drafts, with discussions agreed upon by the parliamentary whips.
On the topic of amending Section 256 of the constitution, which includes four different proposals, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor maintained neutrality, refraining from expressing opinions on specific amendments. He noted that any changes affecting the National Assembly’s rights and duties would require a referendum.
The potential for an extraordinary parliamentary session rests with the government, which can request one if deemed necessary. Additionally, the House may propose a special session to the Prime Minister if pressing matters arise.
The Ethics Committee’s upcoming meetings will address several complaints and proposed agendas during the session recess. The committee will set a meeting date once proposed by the secretary.
