Wan Nor Responds to Cambodian National Assembly’s Accusations at Geneva Forum

Geneva: Wan Nor issued a statement to the International Union of the People’s Republic of China (IPU) in response to the Cambodian National Assembly Speaker’s distorted accusations that Thailand violated agreements by attacking civilians and using chemical weapons at the Geneva forum. He said all of this was Cambodia’s actions against Thailand and urged the ASEAN Chair to send observers to the area to examine the facts.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Van Muhammad Nor Matha, President of the National Assembly, stated that due to the ongoing Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, he, as the President of the Thai National Unit in the IPU, was unable to attend the meeting due to prior commitments. However, he received news that the Speaker of the Cambodian National Assembly made statements implicating him both last night and this morning to clarify the facts to the public both domestically and internationally. He therefore wished to read the statement expressing his deep regret and disappointment upon learning that during the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s high-level meeting in Geneva this week, Thailand was accused by the Speaker of the Cambodian National Assembly of Thailand of baseless allegations regarding the recent border clashes. The Thai Parliament categorically rejects and strongly condemns such false and baseless statements, which are completely inaccurate and contradict the facts officially stated by the Ministry o
f Foreign Affairs and the Thai government regarding the incident, including Cambodia’s violation of the ceasefire agreement. The Thai government has filed a complaint with the ASEAN Chair, the United States leader, and the Chinese leader. The Thai Parliament urges Cambodia to cease disseminating false information or distorting facts, which could create misunderstandings and worsen the situation for unilateral gain.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives also stated that Thailand remains committed to the United Nations Charter, international humanitarian principles, the protection of civilian life, and the ceasefire agreement. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the ASEAN Chair and our allies for their support of the ceasefire agreement reached on Monday, July 28. Thailand confirmed that it has strictly complied with the agreement, but Cambodia has not ceased its fire to date, violating the agreement. We urge Cambodia to strictly comply with the agreement.

The Speaker also urged the ASEAN Chair to establish an observer team from various countries to gather facts and jointly find a path to a truly successful ceasefire. Ultimately, the Thai Parliament reaffirms its firm determination to abide by the rule of law, the accuracy of the facts, and the pursuit of peace in accordance with all agreements. The Parliament is prepared to investigate the facts for the ultimate and sustainable benefit of the international community. The Parliament will forward this statement to the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for further dissemination to all member states to ensure a true understanding of the situation. At the same time, I will personally travel to the area to investigate the facts on August 1st. I have also instructed the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee to forward the findings to the Thai Friendship Group, which comprises dozens of countries. A statement has been sent in both English and Thai today.

“They accused the Thai side, led by the Thai military, of violating the agreement, attempting and conducting targeted operations, injuring and killing Cambodian civilians, including hospitals, and using chemical weapons to suppress the situation. All of this is in fact what Cambodia did to us, and then claiming we did to them. If this is not true, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would not dare confirm it and has requested the ASEAN Chair to investigate. Therefore, these are unfounded statements by the Cambodian People’s Assembly,” said Mr. Van Mumad Noor.
