West Papua prepares for TNI commander, police chief visit

The West Papua provincial government has prepared materials on regional development ahead of the visit of National Defense Forces (TNI) commander Admiral Yudo Margono and National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo on January 10, 2023.

“The material that will be presented is related to the achievements of COVID-19 handling in West Papua, the province’s preparation for the 2024 regional head elections (Pilkada), and dissemination of information on the special autonomy law,” the provincial secretariat’s assistant II Melkias Werinussa informed here on Saturday.

The provincial government held several meetings to prepare the materials, which the West Papua governor will present to the TNI commander and police chief during their visit to Manokwari, Werinussa said.

Until now, the provincial government has been coordinating with the related parties on the precise visit schedule. However, he assured that the government is ready for the arrival of the two senior officials.

“The arrival of the TNI commander and police chief is the responsibility of the West Papua provincial government, although there are units under them here, namely the Kasuari Regional Military Command (Kodam) and the West Papua Regional Police,” he informed.

Meanwhile, in terms of readiness, the West Papua police chief, Inspector General Daniel Tahi Monang Silitonga, said his side has coordinated with the commanders of Kasuari Kodam and the Navy’s Fleet Command III (Koarmada III) Base.

“I have met with the commanders of Kasuari Kodam and the Navy’s Koarmada III. We will prepare and evaluate the welcoming plan,” he said.

A traditional welcoming ceremony will be held for the TNI commander and police chief at the West Papua Regional Police Headquarters.

“The preparation starts from their arrival and the welcome with West Papuan tradition,” Silitonga said.

In terms of COVID-19 handling, the West Papua Health Office said that a total of 8,584 health workers in the province are targeted for the second booster or the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The second booster vaccination in West Papua was simultaneously launched in 13 districts and cities on August 8, 2022.
