Bangkok: Wisut Chainarun, the government whip, has openly acknowledged that the absence of government MPs nearly resulted in a parliamentary collapse. He has declared his intention to disclose the identities of MPs who he claims have been misusing government time, emphasizing that he is prepared to let parliament collapse if such issues persist.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wisut discussed the quorum concerns at a recent House of Representatives meeting, following a conversation with Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, the Speaker of the House. He indicated that the next meeting should see the attendance of MPs made public. Mr. Wisut expressed his frustration, stating, “I’ve already spoken to Chairman Wan Nor and asked him to please let it go. I want the name. No matter which party, I won’t spare face. Those backstabbers are stealing government time.”
He further clarified that the issue is not about causing trouble but about adhering to principles. Mr. Wisut remarked on the potential link between the absenteeism and “position” negotiations, noting that parties like the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party have internal divisions that need addressing for the nation’s benefit.
When questioned about the source of the missing votes, Mr. Wisut admitted that the government’s margin over the opposition was minimal. He explained that many MPs, including ministers, were occupied with an urgent meeting at Government House concerning the Thai-Cambodian border. Wisut emphasized the importance of coordinating with the government to respect time limits and avoid scheduling conflicts on Wednesdays or Thursdays, given the current national issues with the border and US taxes.
