31 Workers Survive LA Tunnel Collapse

Los angeles: A large drainage tunnel in Los Angeles, or LA, in the United States, partially collapsed, trapping 31 workers inside and being safely rescued.

According to Thai News Agency, the LA Fire Department reported that the collapse occurred in Wilmington, LA. The tunnel, which measures 18 feet (5.5 meters) in diameter, gave way due to soil subsidence. This incident was part of an LA County wastewater treatment project aimed at constructing a 7-mile (11.25-kilometer) tunnel to improve drainage. During the collapse, 27 workers were trapped, while four managed to climb up the debris and were lifted back to the tunnel entrance, which was 5 miles (8 kilometers) away. Remarkably, all workers emerged unscathed from the ordeal. More than 100 people were involved in the rescue operation.

The contractor overseeing the project stated that the tunnel is designed to transport wastewater to a treatment plant, where it will be processed and discharged into the Pacific Ocean. The construction of this crucial infrastructure has a projected cost exceeding $630 million (20.6 billion baht).
