Abhisit Urges Overhaul of Thai Tourism System to Revitalize Industry

Bangkok: Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has highlighted the stagnation in Thailand’s tourism sector, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to revamp the system. He voiced his concerns during a lecture titled “Tourism and the Future of Thailand,” organized by the Association of Thai Travel Agents at the Queensland Hotel. Abhisit warned that without strategic realignment to cater to evolving global tourist behaviors, the industry risks further decline.

According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit stressed the necessity for the government to adapt its tourism marketing strategies to reflect the current trend of travelers seeking unique and individualized experiences, often in smaller groups. He advocated for the development of secondary tourist destinations to help distribute income, reduce inequality, and foster sustainable growth in local communities.

Abhisit also addressed the ongoing “tourism labor crisis,” which remains unresolved in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He proposed that the government implement the Reskill-Upskill program to bolster the technological capabilities of service workers and aid entrepreneurs in leveraging technology to cut costs and enhance efficiency.

Additionally, Abhisit urged swift action to restore and improve the infrastructure of secondary tourist spots, many of which suffer from neglect and accessibility issues. He highlighted the importance of utilizing social media as a pivotal tool for international marketing and public relations, aligning with the digital-age behaviors of tourists when making travel decisions.

Abhisit concluded with a stark warning: “If the government continues with its current approach, Thai tourism will only regress further. The government must dare to adapt, invest in people, and utilize technology to its fullest potential to ensure Thailand regains its status as a global destination.”
