Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva makes a triumphant return as leader of the Democrat Party, securing 96.18% of the vote amid enthusiastic support.
According to Thai News Agency, the extraordinary general meeting of the Democrat Party witnessed a significant turnout, with numerous former members renewing their association, particularly those aligned with Abhisit Vejjajiva’s political ideology. Notable figures such as Korn Chatikavanij, Sakolthee Phattiyakul, and Nipit Intarasombat were among those rejoining the party.
Upon his arrival at the meeting venue, Abhisit was greeted by supporters bearing flowers and signs, expressing their endorsement of his leadership. In a brief interaction with the media, he stated that his commitment to the party had never wavered. Abhisit then engaged with party leaders and members, reinforcing his connection with them.
Former leaders Chuan Leekpai and Jurin Laksanawisit discussed the future trajectory of the party, underlining the goal of establishing it as a formidable alternative for the electorate. They acknowledged the challenges in quickly regaining public confidence but remained optimistic about the party’s potential.
Notably absent from the meeting were former executive members such as Chalermchai Sri-on. However, other prominent figures like Decha-ism Khaothong and Chaichana Dechadecho participated in the proceedings.
Abhisit’s nomination as the new party leader was uncontested, with Thepphong Chaiyanan putting forth his name. The vote count revealed overwhelming support, leading to a moment of applause as Abhisit expressed his gratitude and shared his sentiments with the members.
In forming the party’s executive committee, Abhisit appointed several key figures to strategic roles. Korn Chatikavanij will manage policy, Karndee Leowpairoj will handle the digital economy, and Juri Numkaew will oversee corporate communications. Other appointments include Ratklao Intawong Suwannakiri for women, youth, and sustainability; Weeraphong Prapha for international economics; Satit Wongnongtoey for political strategy; Issara Sunthornwat for international affairs; and Amporn Pinasa for education and the Northeast region. Chaiwut Bannawat has been nominated as party secretary-general.
Prior to the meeting, Korn expressed his enthusiasm to contribute to “good politics” for the benefit of the people, suggesting a blend of old and new leadership to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
Chaichana Dechacho, tasked with overseeing the southern region, voiced confidence in regaining the public’s support, recalling past successes with a record 12 million votes. He also highlighted the financial influence in politics, noting that MPs were being purchased for substantial sums, and emphasized the need for public awareness and education.
