Anutin Charnvirakul’s Tensions with Bhumtham Wechayachai Over Khao Kradong Dispute

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, expressed his frustration with Bhumtham Wechayachai, a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, accusing him of attempting to discredit him using the unresolved Khao Kradong land dispute. Anutin criticized Bhumtham’s actions, claiming that despite being in power for three months, no significant progress has been made, and he accused Bhumtham of merely engaging in rhetoric and playing the hero on screen.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin dismissed claims made by Bhumtham suggesting that the Khao Kradong issue had not advanced due to Anutin’s control over the Interior Ministry. Anutin emphasized that the Ministry of Interior had already addressed the matter through an official statement, clarifying discrepancies between Bhumtham’s statements and actual meeting outcomes. He distanced himself from recent developments, noting that he had not been in a leadership role within the ministry at the time.

Anutin further criticized the perceived lack of action regarding drug busts, asserting that his presence and efforts were being overshadowed by others who sought credit without taking substantial steps. He emphasized his commitment to legal processes and challenged his critics to match his on-ground efforts, such as visiting border areas and actively participating in drug enforcement operations.

Addressing accusations of being undermined by Bhumtham, Anutin expressed his belief that Bhumtham harbored ambitions of becoming the Minister of the Interior and thus sought to tarnish Anutin’s reputation. He recounted previous amicable interactions with Bhumtham, contrasting them with the current situation, but dismissed any personal vendetta, attributing Bhumtham’s actions to political maneuvering.

When questioned about the possibility of addressing the Khao Kradong issue in Parliament, Anutin stated his preparedness to respond, emphasizing that the facts were already established and that civil servants, not political parties, would be responsible for clarifications. He reiterated his commitment to adhering to legal standards and refused to engage in retaliatory actions against political adversaries.

As the conversation turned to the upcoming elections, Anutin remained cautious about discussing future political alignments, particularly with the Bhumjaithai and Prachachon Parties. He underscored his focus on building public confidence and adhering to agreements made with political partners, while acknowledging the complex political landscape.

Anutin concluded the interview by emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and moving forward without harboring grudges, drawing on teachings from his father. He expressed a desire to focus on his responsibilities and contribute positively to the country’s governance, while distancing himself from past political conflicts and controversies.
