Bangkok: The Prime Minister has reiterated the military’s full authority to protect the Thai-Cambodian border amid recent tensions. However, he has yet to issue any direct orders. The Prime Minister expressed his concern for the villagers and has engaged in informal discussions about potential evacuation measures. He has also instructed the Sisaket Member of Parliament to assume full responsibility in this regard.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, addressed reports from the Royal Thai Army that Cambodian soldiers had fired small arms provocatively into Thai territory in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. He confirmed that guidance had already been provided on managing the border situation, emphasizing that the army was fully prepared. However, he noted that no orders could be issued until a policy statement was made. He also mentioned his current inability to participate in the royal ceremony and advised against asking certain questions until the army’s full presence was established. At present, he stated, the focus remains on ideas and coordination.
When questioned about concerns over potential further clashes, Mr. Anutin acknowledged his ongoing worries. He highlighted the importance of informal discussions and preparations for all eventualities, including the provision of shelter for the people.
Addressing inquiries about his communication with the military, Mr. Anutin stated his commitment to offering government support if the military required assistance upon assuming full control. He also deferred questions about military actions in the event of an imminent sovereignty invasion, indicating he would seek answers later.
Mr. Anutin conveyed a message to worried locals, instructing MPs in affected areas, many of whom are fortunately from the Bhumjaithai Party, to expedite coordination and preparations to ensure the safety of residents in the event of an emergency.
