Bangkok: Bhumjaithai MPs are urging the government to disclose details of a deal with the United States concerning a 36% tariff set to take effect on August 1st. They are particularly concerned about the impact on Phang Nga Port, a significant tourist destination in Thailand frequented by Russians and Chinese, and the implications for national sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chalat Ratchakitprakarn, a Bhumjaithai Party MP, expressed his concerns following the absence of Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, from a live session meant to provide details on the negotiations. While neighboring countries like Singapore and Vietnam have prepared for such tariffs, with Vietnam even negotiating successfully, Thailand’s government has yet to clarify its strategy. Mr. Pichai recently mentioned that although discussions have been positive, the US remains firm on implementing the tariff. The lack of clear guidance leaves the public and businesses uncertain about how to prepare for the impending changes.
The situation is complicated by reports of a secret deal involving the US potentially using the Phang Nga naval base, raising sovereignty concerns. The acting prime minister confirmed the existence of such a deal, increasing worries about border security and military influence. Mr. Chalat questioned the wisdom of trading strategic assets, especially in a region dominated by Russian and Chinese tourists, for economic concessions.
Furthermore, Mr. Chalat urged the government to outline a relief plan for those affected by the US tariffs, including businesses and workers. He emphasized the need for transparency in negotiations, suggesting that if Mr. Pichai could disclose negotiation details, it might benefit the country. The call for clarity and preparation is crucial as the tariff implementation date approaches.
