Bangkok: The Bhumjaithai Party has initiated an investigation into three of its Members of Parliament (MPs) for defying party resolutions on the Entertainment Complex Act. The MPs reportedly claimed they were approached by nine individuals offering eight-figure sums. Despite the situation, the party maintains that its MPs are committed to performing their duties effectively, regardless of their position in government or opposition.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Nan Boonthida Somchai, MP for Ubon Ratchathani and spokesperson for the Bhumjaithai Party, provided an update following a party meeting regarding the incident. She clarified that the party aims for clarity and transparency, emphasizing that the draft should be dropped rather than withdrawn. By allowing the draft to enter the first reading, the party intended for all MPs to vote against it, effectively preventing its re-proposal for another six months and informing the public about the content.
A fact-finding committee, led by Mr. Chatda Thaiset, has been established to investigate the matter. The three MPs involved are required to pause their party activities during the inquiry. Witnesses have attested to hearing about the proposed eight-figure offer, and six MPs have already informed party leaders about the individuals involved.
Ms. Nan stated that the identity of those offering the bribe is yet to be determined, with the fact-finding committee responsible for further investigation. In response to queries about whether the individuals were from the government, the party spokesperson noted that the involved parties held influential and reliable positions. The Bhumjaithai Party prioritizes quality over quantity in political matters, focusing on whether actions benefit the public and address issues effectively, regardless of being in government or opposition.
