Bhumjaithai Party Urges Parliamentary Debate on Trump’s Tax Deal

Bangkok: Bhumjaithai Party is set to engage in discussions with opposition parties, urging the opening of a general debate in parliament regarding the government’s Trump tax deal. The party aims to address the concerns surrounding the potential reduction of import tax to 0%, which could risk national sovereignty.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaichanok Chidchob, MP for Buriram and secretary-general of the Bhumjaithai Party, announced the party’s resolution alongside other key members, including Mr. Paradorn Prisananantakul, MP for Angthong, Mr. Chalat Ratchakitprakan, and Ms. Nan Bunthida Somchai. They seek to hold a general debate without a vote under Section 152 of the Constitution to discuss the government’s handling of the Trump tax deal.

Mr. Paradorn emphasized the party’s desire for transparency, expressing concerns over the lack of public awareness about the government’s plans. He highlighted the impending enforcement of a 36% US import tax, which could impact Thai exports. The party is particularly concerned about the agricultural sector, fearing that reducing the import tax ceiling to 0% could adversely affect Thai farmers.

The potential loss of sovereignty is another critical issue for the Bhumjaithai Party, urging the government to explain its actions and allow society to prepare for any repercussions. The party plans to discuss the matter further with opposition parties to push for a general debate in parliament.

Mr. Phradon mentioned that opening such a debate requires the support of at least one-tenth of the House of Representatives, approximately 50 members. Although the urgency of the debate before August 1 is uncertain, Mr. Paradorn emphasized the importance of expediting discussions with opposition parties to submit the motion promptly. He urged ministers to prioritize the issue, highlighting the benefits of an early debate for both parliament and the public.
