Bhumtham Expresses Concerns Over Cambodian Border Agreement

Bangkok: Bhumtham, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who is also acting as the Prime Minister, expressed his concerns regarding the Thai-Cambodian border agreement during a meeting with the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) led by the Second Army Region. He revealed his apprehensions about Cambodia potentially making contradictory statements post-agreement and emphasized the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty. Acknowledging the complexity of border issues, he remarked that some disputes take centuries to resolve, but remained confident that prioritizing national interests would yield a positive outcome. In a light-hearted moment, he checked his wristwatch and jested about his impending departure from his position.

According to Thai News Agency, the RBC meeting focused on border issues, following up on conditions discussed in the First Army Region RBC meeting. Mr. Phumtham clarified that the discussions would largely continue from previous meetings, though variations might occur depending on local conditions. One point of contention was the barbed wire fence, which was not part of prior discussions. Mr. Phumtham noted the inconsistency and mentioned that a protest letter had been submitted to the military attach© in Phnom Penh, while expressing concern over Cambodia’s unrelated public remarks.

In response to questions about Cambodian protests urging US President Donald Trump to mediate the border issues, Mr. Bhumtham stated it was Cambodia’s prerogative, insisting that Thailand would resolve the matter through bilateral mechanisms. He also assessed the situation one month after the Thai-Cambodian clashes, acknowledging the persistence of border negotiations. Though such disputes can span decades or centuries, he reassured that Thailand would remain committed to peaceful resolutions and safeguarding national interests.

Throughout the interview, Mr. Phumtham maintained a calm demeanor, reiterating the importance of gathering evidence and the positive international response to Thailand’s stance. Despite Cambodia’s inconsistent statements, he emphasized the clarity and reality of Thailand’s position. As the interview concluded, he once again humorously checked his watch, underscoring his awareness of the time and his role’s impending conclusion.
