BTS Implements New Fare Structure for Green Line Extension

Bangkok: BTS is set to implement a new fare structure for the Green Line extension, transitioning from a flat rate to a distance-based fare system starting November 1. The adjustment will see fares increase from the current 15 baht for the entire line to a starting fare of 17 baht, with the cost rising based on distance and capped at 45 baht.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wisanu Traisompol, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, announced that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is preparing to adjust the fare structure for the Green Line extensions in three sections: Mo Chit-Khu Khot, Bang Chak-Samut Prakan, and Pho Nimit-Bang Wa, effective from November 1, 2025. The new structure aims to reflect the actual cost of service. For passengers traveling between the concession and extension sections, the maximum total fare will be capped at 65 baht, marking an increase of only 3 baht from the current rate. This adjustment keeps the fare lower than the average for electric train systems in major global cities.

Previously, the BMA collected a flat fare of 15 baht for the extension, which was not aligned with the operational and maintenance costs. The administration has been covering over 6 billion baht annually to bridge the financial gap, with revenue from the extension reaching approximately 2.4 billion baht per year against total expenses of 9.012 billion baht. The restructuring of fares is deemed necessary to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the city’s mass transit system.

In addition to the new fare structure, Bangkok offers discounts to specific groups. Children and students under 23 years old can avail a 30% discount, while senior citizens aged 60 and above receive a 50% discount.
