Buddhist Office to Inspect Wat Trithatthep’s Accounts Amid Management Concerns

Bangkok: The Buddhist Office is preparing to inspect the accounts of a famous temple and discuss management. The Office of Buddhism is preparing to inspect the accounts of Wat Trithatthep and discuss the temple’s management after the former abbot disrobed. If corruption is found, criminal charges will be filed.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Inthaporn Chan-aim, Director of the National Office of Buddhism, provided information via telephone, stating that the Office of Buddhism had been in discussions with a team to visit Wat Trithatthep. However, they have yet to agree on a time due to ongoing religious duties at the temple. The primary focus of the visit will be to inspect the temple’s financial accounts and discuss its future management plan. The former abbot, who disrobed, did not inform the Office of Buddhism beforehand. Instead, he traveled to Wat Chan Samakkhi in Nong Khai Province to declare his intention. Wat Chan Samakkhi then contacted the Office of Buddhism, which sent an officer to witness the disrobing. The abbot chose to disrobe following a video clip that brought him shame, seeing it as a way to take responsibility for his duties and Buddhism.

Regarding disciplinary actions, if the former abbot violated monastic discipline, the penalty would be disrobing, which he has already done. The next step is to investigate the financial records to determine any involvement in temple money corruption. Should any evidence of corruption be found, criminal proceedings will be initiated, with the Office of Buddhism supporting the efforts of the NACC.

The atmosphere at Wat Trithatthep this morning was lively, as the temple held a ceremony celebrating the ordination of three monks. Many attendees participated in the ceremony and made merit. Information suggests that no police officers have arrived yet, but it is anticipated that they will inspect the area once the ceremony concludes.
