Cambodia to Send 800 Athletes and Officials to SEA Games, Emphasizes Strict Gender and Passport Checks

Bangkok: Cambodia has announced its decision to send a contingent of approximately 800 athletes and officials to the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. This announcement was made during the 33rd SEA Games Athlete Chiefs Meeting, presided over by Asst. Prof. Pimol Srivikorn, President of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand and the SEA Games Federation, at The Grand Fourwings Hotel.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting outlined preparations for the SEA Games scheduled to occur from December 9-20 in Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla. The gathering included notable figures such as Mr. Chaiyaphak Siriwat, CEO of the SEA Games Federation, and Heads of Athletes from ASEAN countries. Discussions focused on ensuring compliance with regulations necessary for the smooth conduct of the Games.

Mr. Chaipak noted that Cambodia’s representation, led by Sokvisan Yan, head of the Cambodian Athletes Association, and Vath Chamroeun, Secretary-General of the Cambodian Olympic Committee, will include about 600 athletes and over 100 officials. This figure marks a significant reduction from the originally planned 1,600 participants. The SEA Games Federation expressed its commitment to maintaining a politically neutral sports environment, aligning with the International Olympic Committee’s principles.

The SEA Games Federation CEO highlighted the importance of separating politics from sports to ensure the event’s success and security. He reassured that despite political tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, measures are in place to handle the situation effectively. He further stated that if Cambodia does not participate, it would affect seven sports due to insufficient competing nations. Nevertheless, events with only three participating countries will continue, with gold and silver medals awarded.

Another critical issue addressed was the implementation of random gender testing and strict passport inspections for participants. The SEA Games Federation confirmed that testing procedures will be determined by individual sports federations, independent of the Olympic Council of Asia’s guidelines. Passport checks aim to prevent any forgery or misuse, ensuring fair competition.

The SEA Games Federation has reiterated its dedication to upholding integrity and safety standards for all athletes, emphasizing that no nation will be permitted to bypass these regulations during the competition in Thailand.
