Cambodian Protesters Gather at Sa Kaeo Province Border Amid Rising Tensions

Sa kaeo: The border situation in Sa Kaeo Province is increasingly tense as Cambodian protesters, led by monks, approach the barbed wire fence separating Thailand and Cambodia. Cambodian soldiers have been intermittently firing small arms provocatively.

According to Thai News Agency, reporters observed continuous movement from the Cambodian side in the areas of Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaew in Khok Sung District. Local Cambodian leaders have instructed residents, including villagers, monks, and individuals of all ages and abilities, to gather near the border fence. More than 100 people have settled in temporary shelters along the Cambodian border, opposite Ban Nong Chan and Nong Ya Kaew.

Thai security sources reported that this gathering is part of ongoing pressure from Cambodian villagers on Thai authorities. Cambodian groups have been present in border areas for several days, staying overnight and moving regularly. In response, the Burapha Task Force has increased patrols and deployed drones to monitor the border, aiming to prevent any escalation. While no direct provocations or violence have been observed from the Cambodian side, the atmosphere remains tense due to the growing number of protesters.

Further reports from Cambodia indicate that the Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province is supporting the movement, ensuring food and supplies are provided to protesters. On the Thai side, authorities continue to work within international frameworks, coordinating with local officials and community leaders in Khok Sung District to monitor the situation closely and prepare contingency plans. Thai citizens are concerned about the long-term impact of the protests on the border atmosphere.

At around 2:00 PM, gunfire was reported in the Phu Phi area of Sao Thong Chai subdistrict, Kantharalak district, Sisaket province. Thai soldiers reported that Cambodian soldiers fired at the barbed wire, seemingly to provoke a reaction. However, Thai forces remained composed and controlled the situation.

In response to the incident, rumors of potential clashes spread, prompting some residents to leave the area. However, some families, like the Panpop family in Ban Phum Sorol, have chosen to stay, attributing the gunfire to mere provocations. Schools in border areas have adjusted their schedules, ending classes early for safety. Local residents and officials continue to closely monitor the situation.
