Chiang Rai Residents Brace for Potential Flooding Amidst Typhoon Wipha

Mae sai: Mae Sai border, Chiang Rai Province, in addition to being in the direction of Typhoon Wipha, must also watch out for heavy rain in Myanmar, the headwaters of Sai River, which may cause major flooding like last year. Villagers are keeping an eye on and preparing for the continuous rain.

According to Thai News Agency, at the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, the influence of Typhoon Wipha has caused continuous rain, sometimes heavy, sometimes light, alternating. Currently, military engineers are rushing to strengthen the Sai flood barrier to prevent flooding as much as possible, racing against time as Typhoon Wipha continues to get closer, even though the Sai River separating the Thai-Myanmar border is still more than 2 meters lower than the bridge.

At present, the riverside defense line, both the earthen embankment and the walls of the Sai River, is 90 percent complete. However, there are still gaps and risky areas. It is necessary to quickly lay down the big bags to be ready to deal with the rising water. Villagers in various communities and vendors at Sai Lom Joy Market have closed their shops and moved their products to a safe place. Villagers in Tham Pha Chom community, the first area to receive the water and which was severely flooded last year, are rushing to move their belongings to higher ground, preparing to deal with the storm Wipha. Officers are taking turns helping the villagers, especially bedridden patients and the elderly, who have already prepared evacuation points to cope with the situation.

In addition, it is accelerating the knowledge of villagers to check the water level from the Thai Water application to assess the situation by themselves.
