Bangkok: The Constitutional Court has set a decision date to determine the fate of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in the controversial audio clip case involving Cambodian Senate President Samdech Hun Sen. This crucial decision is scheduled for August 29th. Paetongtarn, along with the National Security Council Secretary-General, is also expected to appear for questioning on August 21st. The Court has clarified that failure to appear will not impact the proceedings.
According to Thai News Agency, the case revolves around a petition filed by the Senate President and 36 senators. They have requested a ruling on the dissemination of an audio clip from a conversation between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, which was broadcast on June 18, 2025. Paetongtarn confirmed the authenticity of the conversation during a press conference, emphasizing it was a private call intended for gentle negotiation to maintain Thailand’s peace and sovereignty.
The petitioners, however, argue that Paetongtarn has shown negligence by not responding or taking appropriate measures aligned with her role as Prime Minister. They cite her personal ties with Cambodia as a conflict of interest, suggesting her actions have consistently favored Cambodian interests. They claim she has violated ethical standards, leading to the termination of her ministerial status under specific constitutional sections.
The Court has arranged for the examination of Paetongtarn and the National Security Council Secretary-General on August 21st. Those failing to appear will be considered as having no objections. Both parties involved in the case must submit any closing statements by August 27th. The oral statement, consultation, and vote are scheduled for August 29th, with the verdict to be announced later that afternoon.
Attendance at the hearing will be permitted on an individual basis, allowing observers to witness the final decision in this significant case.
