Controversy Over 4,000 Baht Crab Omelet Prompts Ministry Investigation

Bangkok: The drama of the "4,000 baht crab omelet" has reached the ears of the Ministry of Commerce. Jatuporn has ordered the Department of Internal Trade to investigate the controversy surrounding a Michelin-listed restaurant's "crab omelet," which reportedly costs 4,000 baht per plate, compared to the 1,500 baht listed on the menu. He emphasized that any dish that doesn't match the description cannot be considered authentic.

According to Thai News Agency, the case of "Peachy," a famous YouTuber, who posted about her experience ordering a crab omelet from a well-known restaurant for 1,500 baht, but was actually charged 4,000 baht, is generating heavy criticism online. Recently, Commerce Minister Chatuporn Buruspat stated that he will assign the Department of Internal Trade to investigate the facts.

Details are yet to be released, but in principle, the price charged to consumers must match the price listed on the menu. Failure to do so will undermine trade confidence. "Sustainable business requires trust. If consumers feel the prices don't match what they see on the menu, they'll be disappointed," said Mr. Chatuporn.

The story began when "Peachy" posted on X on August 15th that she had gone to eat crab omelet, one of the few Thai restaurants included in the Michelin Guide. The menu listed the price at 1,500 baht, but when she checked the bill, she was charged 4,000 baht, with the restaurant claiming to have "upgraded the crab meat" without prior notice.

While the owner admitted that the food was delicious and made with high-quality ingredients, he felt disappointed because the menu didn't mention that prices were subject to change. This sparked widespread online criticism of the appropriateness of pricing and customer communication.
