Disaster Resistance: Raising the Level of Protection Against Toxic Water and Mudslides in Mae Sai

Mae sai: Several provinces in the North have begun to face flash floods and forest runoff in many areas, causing residents of the Mae Sai border community in Chiang Rai, which experienced major flooding last year, to become increasingly worried because if there is flooding this year, it will not only be water and mud, but also toxic substances from mining in Myanmar. This has caused relevant agencies to raise the level of flood protection in Mae Sai, including strict evacuation plans.

According to Thai News Agency, the recent onset of flash floods and forest runoff in several northern provinces has heightened concerns among the residents of Mae Sai. The community, which suffered significant flooding last year, is now on high alert due to the potential threat of toxic substances being carried by floodwaters from nearby mining activities in Myanmar.

In response to these concerns, authorities have initiated measures to bolster flood defenses in Mae Sai. These efforts include implementing stringent evacuation plans to ensure the safety of residents. The focus is on preemptive actions to mitigate the risk of hazardous material contamination, aiming to prevent a repeat of last year’s disastrous flooding.
