Dr. Tul Challenges Promotions of Police Doctors Over Ethical Concerns

Bangkok: Dr. Tul Sitthisomwong, an academic and political activist, has formally petitioned the National Police Chief to oppose the promotions of two high-ranking doctors associated with the Police General Hospital.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Tul submitted a letter concerning Pol. Lt. Gen. Sophonrat Singhajaru, assistant national police chief and former chief physician, and Pol. Lt. Gen. Taweesin Wetchavitar, current chief physician. The letter highlights concerns surrounding their involvement in the treatment of Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra on the hospital’s 14th floor, following a Medical Council resolution that accused them of providing false medical opinions.

Dr. Tul’s petition requests the establishment of a fact-finding committee to investigate these officers and any other personnel potentially involved in Mr. Thaksin’s treatment. He urges the National Police Chief to conduct a serious disciplinary investigation if any wrongdoing is discovered. During this process, Dr. Tul recommends the reassignment of the two officers to different positions to ensure transparency and prevent interference with ongoing investigations by various agencies, including the Royal Thai Police and the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The activist also calls for a comprehensive report of all investigations from these agencies to be submitted to the National Police Commissioner. This report is intended to inform future decisions on police appointments and transfers set for 2025. Dr. Tul emphasizes the importance of ethical conduct among police officers, warning against actions that could be perceived as seeking inappropriate personal or professional benefits.

Dr. Tul criticizes the potential promotion of the officers involved, particularly in light of the current political dynamics. He points out that the Chairwoman of the Police Commission is Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the suspended Prime Minister and daughter of Mr. Thaksin. This connection raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Dr. Tul stresses that any promotions, especially of Pol. Lt. Gen. Sophonrat, could lead to future leadership roles that might compromise the integrity of the police force. He advocates for a transparent appointment process to uphold the moral principles of police administration.
