Ekanat Pledges Crackdown on Companies Illegally Transporting Toxic Waste

Bangkok: Ekanat Promphan, Thailand’s Minister of Industry, has vowed to arrest all companies involved in the illegal transportation of toxic industrial waste. He emphasized that no matter the financial power of these companies, they will face justice and be penalized for their actions. He urged anyone with information to come forward directly to him, without any need for anonymity.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkanat Promphan outlined the challenges posed by industrial waste management and highlighted it as a critical agenda for the nation. As Thailand seeks to attract reputable investors, the image of the country as a dumping ground for industrial waste needs to be addressed. He pointed out the deceptive practices of business groups claiming to be environmentally friendly while actually contributing to pollution, citing the example of the Win Process factory in Rayong Province, which has failed to manage waste responsibly, thereby affecting the local population.

Mr. Ekkanat noted that he has consistently advocated for the importance of addressing these issues. He mentioned the significant increase in the budget for the Department of Industrial Works from 17 million baht to 140 million baht in 2016, with an additional 400 million baht allocated for 2017. However, he stressed the need for caution in using these funds to avoid inadvertently supporting unethical businesses and reiterated the commitment to arrest and suppress such groups.

He also responded to concerns raised by opposition MPs regarding industrial waste transport trucks in Rayong Province. Mr. Ekkanat assured that he takes all information seriously, regardless of its source, and has already instructed local authorities to file complaints with the police. The case has been forwarded to the Department of Special Investigation for further action.

Mr. Ekkanat declared that anyone violating Thai law is an adversary, and he remains undeterred by external pressures. He encouraged the public to provide any additional information, insisting on transparency and accountability. He warned that businesses continuing to engage in illegal activities will face severe consequences, including the suspension of licenses and closure. Mr. Ekkanat cited a past case involving Win Poses to emphasize the gravity of the situation, asserting that such businesses will end up facing justice, regardless of their wealth.
