EOD Team Successfully Detonates BM-21 Rockets in Sisaket Province

Sisaket: The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team successfully detonated two BM-21 rockets on Kantharalak Road and behind the Muang Sisaket Subdistrict Administrative Organization building. These rockets were fired by Cambodia on July 24.

According to Thai News Agency, the EOD team executed the detonation of a BM-21 rocket head near the Muang Subdistrict Administrative Organization building in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. This action followed the evacuation of Subdistrict Administrative Organization officials and villagers from the area due to the threat. The rockets had been a concern since being shot down by Cambodia, with the surrounding area housing people currently in a refugee shelter.

Before recovery efforts, villagers and Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) officials took precautionary measures by moving important documents and equipment from the SAO office building. They also removed window panes to prevent damage, as the rocket’s impact site was merely three meters away.

As the EOD officers prepared for the recovery, local villagers participated in a traditional ritual by lighting incense sticks to honor a centuries-old fig tree in front of the Muang Subdistrict Administrative Organization building. This tree holds spiritual significance for the locals, who engage in this practice during community activities.

Post-recovery inspections revealed minimal damage, with only a small portion of the roof affected. Sandbags had been strategically placed to mitigate damage. A piece of the BM-21 rocket, believed to be its head, was collected by officials as evidence. Forensic officers from the Sisaket Provincial Police assessed the surrounding area but reported no additional damage to residential buildings.

The Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) mayor recounted hearing numerous explosions on July 24th, prompting the evacuation. It wasn’t until July 30th, when SAO officials returned, that a hole was discovered behind the building, leading to police notification and subsequent investigation. The local community hopes for peace, allowing them to resume their normal lives.

In a related incident, another BM-21 rocket was recovered on Kantharalak-Khao Phra Wihan Road. It was detonated on July 24th, the same day it hit a convenience store inside a PTT gas station in Ban Phue. Safety measures included closing a one-kilometer radius around the site and inspecting homes. The mission concluded without additional explosives found.

Following the disposal operations, officials noted the use of TNT as a detonator in the bombings. Safety was a primary concern, especially given the proximity to communities. Five bomb munitions have been identified in the area, with three being BM-21 rockets.

Tensions remain at shelters for those affected by the border unrest. Approximately 200 people, including children, teenagers, and the elderly, reside in these centers. Able-bodied men periodically return to check on their possessions before returning to the shelters.

Grandma Bang-on, a resident at one of the centers since July 24th, shared her experience of receiving warm care, food, and engaging in activities like traditional dances and games, which have helped her maintain a positive outlook.
