Expressway to M82 Motorway Set to Open with Free Trial for Public

Bangkok: The expressway connecting to the M82 motorway is set to open on October 22nd, offering a free trial for the public. This section, linking Bang Khun Thian to Ekkachai, emphasizes the highest safety measures for the public.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, along with Ministry of Transport executives, visited the Rama II area to review the progress of Motorway No. 82 (M82), specifically the Bang Khun Thian-Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo elevated road. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion on Rama II Road, the primary route to the southern region.

Mr. Pipat announced that the 8.3-kilometer Bang Khun Thian-Ekkachai section of the M82 project is complete and has passed a safety assessment by the Department of Highways and the Expressway Authority of Thailand. It will be available for public use starting October 22, 2025. Plans are in place to expedite the remaining construction, with the 16-kilometer Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo section expected to open by April 2026, and the entire project to be completed by 2027. Full service is anticipated by 2028, with the 47-kilometer stretch from Bang Kho Lae to Ban Phaeo becoming fully operational.

Mr. Pipat emphasized the importance of public safety, directing agencies to implement strict safety measures, including installing safety nets at the Tha Chin River bridge and inspecting road surfaces, traffic signs, lighting, and drainage systems. Speed limits will be set at 80 kilometers per hour during the trial period. A special engineering team, in collaboration with the Council of Engineers, will conduct safety checks at every stage. Traffic plans have been adjusted to delay construction lane closures until 8:00 PM, with normal road openings at 5:30 AM to minimize travel disruptions.

The opening of the M82 elevated section from Bang Khun Thian to Ekkachai represents a significant step towards the completion of Rama II Road, a development eagerly awaited by the public for improved safety and convenience. The Ministry of Transport is committed to expediting the remaining construction, providing confidence in traveling to the South with ease and safety, Mr. Pipat concluded.

Mr. Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisan, Director-General of the Department of Highways, confirmed the thorough safety inspection of the M82 project, covering the structure, electrical systems, traffic signage, and drainage system. He plans to coordinate with relevant agencies for a joint inspection to ensure the highest safety standards for the public opening on October 22nd. Contractors and consultants have been instructed to increase the frequency of structural stability inspections to ensure the safety of all road users.
