Father Fatally Shoots Drug-Addicted Son in Udon Thani Home

Bangkok: A father, overwhelmed by his son’s behavior, has shot and killed him in their home. The son, addicted to drugs since his early teens, had become a source of distress for the family due to his violent tendencies and constant demands for money.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident transpired at approximately 8:30 p.m. in a single-story, stilt-raised wooden house located in Kut Sa Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District. Police from Nakha Police Station arrived at the scene to find the body of Mr. Tawan, also known as Off, aged 30, lying lifeless in a pool of blood on the front porch, with a gunshot wound to his chest. A Thai-made long-barreled gas gun was discovered nearby.

Inside the home, Ms. Sompong, 59, the mother of the deceased, was in shock. She recounted that she had been out selling goods at the market and returned home in the evening with the intention of preparing mushroom curry for her son, who had expressed his craving for the dish. As she was tending to the kitchen fire, she heard a gunshot. Her son, who had fetched a bottle of water, was shot and fell in front of the house. The underlying issue, she explained, was his drug addiction, which often led to heated arguments with his father. Earlier that day, he had physically assaulted his father and damaged property. She speculated that her husband, possibly under the influence of alcohol, reacted violently after a disagreement.

The father, 63-year-old Kham Bai, was apprehended by the police. Eyewitnesses reported that he awaited arrest 500 meters from the crime scene, near Wat That Sawang Non Yang. Still intoxicated, he recounted that his son had initiated an argument upon his return from fishing, mocking him and demanding food. After an exchange of insults, Bai, fed up with his son’s long-standing drug abuse and violent behavior, retrieved a rifle and shot him. Bai confessed that he had reached his breaking point after years of his son’s erratic behavior, which included a recent incident where Tawan had physically assaulted his mother.

The police have detained Mr. Kham Bai and confiscated the firearm for further investigation at Nakha Police Station. He faces charges of intentional murder and violations under the Firearms Act.
