Flash Flood Warning Issued for Thailand Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand, potentially leading to flash floods, mudslides, and landslides, particularly in hillside areas near waterways and lowlands. The forecast indicates that the country will continue to experience these severe weather conditions over the next 24 hours, posing significant risks to residents and travelers.

According to Thai News Agency, the monsoon trough is currently affecting the lower northern, upper central, lower northeastern, and eastern regions of Thailand, coupled with a moderate southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, the southern region, and the Gulf of Thailand. These conditions are expected to bring about intense rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which may trigger flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides. Residents in prone areas are advised to remain vigilant, avoid traveling through areas experiencing thunderstorms, and stay clear of routes known for recurrent flooding, particularly low-lying regions susceptible to short-term flooding.

The weather forecast also highlights the need for farmers to take preventive measures by enhancing drainage systems to mitigate the impact on crops and livestock. In the maritime regions, the upper Andaman Sea is experiencing strong waves of about 2 meters, while the lower Andaman Sea has waves between 1-2 meters. Thunderstorm-affected areas may see waves exceeding 2 meters. Sailors in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are advised to exercise caution and small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are urged to remain ashore during this period.

The regional weather outlook includes a 70% chance of thunderstorms in Bangkok and surrounding areas, with temperatures ranging from 25-35 degrees Celsius. The northern region can expect thunderstorms in 80% of the area with heavy rain in specific provinces, while the northeastern region anticipates thunderstorms in 70% of the area. The central region will see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, and the eastern region also anticipates similar conditions with heavy rain expected in Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces.

For the southern region, the east coast expects thunderstorms in 40% of the area, with Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon provinces most affected. The west coast is looking at thunderstorms in 60% of the area, particularly in Ranong and Phang Nga provinces, with varying wind speeds and wave heights depending on the location.
