Flooding in Sukhothai Washes Away Roads and Destroys Houses

Sukhothai: Flooding in Sukhothai remains severe as a strong water mass has washed away a road along the Yom River, creating a 15-meter break. Additionally, two houses have been destroyed by the powerful current.

According to Thai News Agency, the rapid and strong current in the Si Samrong District area has caused significant damage. Although no injuries or fatalities have been reported, the destruction has led to the closure of Sukhothai Wittayakhom School and Udom Darunee School for two days.

Mr. Witthaya Santikun, the District Chief of Sri Samrong, explained that the incident was caused by the collapse of the riverbank adjacent to Village No. 2 and Village No. 5, Ban Na Subdistrict. Despite efforts by local officials and volunteers to block the waterway, the fast-flowing water proved too challenging to manage. Historically, this area has not experienced flooding, but a blockage at the Wang Yai Bridge has contributed to the current situation.

To address the crisis, the Ban Na Subdistrict Administrative Organization has established an evacuation center at its office, prioritizing the evacuation of bedridden patients and the elderly. The province is assisting by providing ready-to-eat meals. Rescue units from various agencies have been dispatched, but the strong currents have hindered efforts to block the spillway, making it challenging for machinery and manpower to reach the affected areas. Approximately 600 households across the two villages have been impacted by the flooding.
