Foreign Scammers Flee to Thailand Amid Myanmar Military Crackdown

Mae sot: More than 500 scammers have fled to Thailand. Foreign scammers are fleeing across the Moei River from Myawaddy to Mae Sot District, Tak Province. Today alone, more than 400 people have fled, with venues nearing capacity. The number is expected to exceed 1,000 after the Myanmar military launched a crackdown.

According to Thai News Agency, the Thai-Myanmar border situation in Tak Province remains tense after armed Myanmar soldiers swept up Chinese smugglers and scammer gangs in the KK Park area. This caused foreigners, suspected of being scammers, to flee across the Moei River to the Thai border in Mae Sot District alone. Today alone, more than 400 people have been arrested, bringing the total number to over 500. Four emergency shelters in the area are nearly full, and the number is expected to rise to 1,000 if the Myanmar military continues its crackdown.

Security officials are expediting the provision of additional shelters, deploying personnel to provide care and humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, all foreign nationals are being screened for human trafficking victims, as they entered the country illegally.
