House Committee on Environment to Address Illegal Logging and Wildlife Hunting at Thai-Cambodian Border

Bangkok: The House Committee on Environment is set to conduct an inspection along the Thai-Cambodian border to address ongoing environmental concerns, particularly the illegal logging of rosewood and wildlife hunting. This initiative comes in response to a series of incidents where Thailand’s natural resources have been exploited.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chivaphap Chivaphatham, a member of the Senate and chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, has announced the committee’s plans to visit the border areas, including Khao Phra Wihan National Park, Huai Sala Wildlife Sanctuary, and Khao Phanom Dong Rak. These locations have been identified as hotspots for illegal activities that threaten the region’s forest resources and wildlife.

Mr. Chivaphap highlighted the urgency of this inspection, especially in light of recent revelations by Mr. Chaiwat Limlikit-aksorn, former director of the National Park Office, who exposed instances of foreigners from neighboring countries invading these areas for illegal logging and hunting. The inspection aims to assess and bolster the protection of these natural resources.

The committee’s focus is to support and encourage local officials and forest rangers who are on the front lines of this environmental challenge. Mr. Chivaphap emphasized that the issue transcends political boundaries and requires collective efforts to safeguard Thailand’s natural heritage. He reiterated the need for ongoing dialogue and action to prevent further exploitation of the country’s resources.

Mr. Chivaphap assured that the committee’s visit is not confrontational but rather supportive, aimed at encouraging the efforts of the National Park Department and its capable leadership. The inspection will cover several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries along the Thai-Cambodian border, reflecting the committee’s commitment to preserving the nation’s environmental integrity.
