Huione Group’s Financial Trail Linked to Call Center Scams Defrauding Thais

Bangkok: Cyber police have admitted to discovering financial trails from online gambling websites operated by call center gangs, linked to a digital currency exchange company in Cambodia. It remains unclear if this involves Hun Sen’s nephew. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong Phiwpaen, Commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), revealed that the company ‘Huione Group’ has been implicated in transferring money from online gambling websites and call center networks that deceive Thai citizens. A financial path has been identified leading to the company in question.

The fraudulent operation involves converting assets acquired from victims’ accounts to various mule accounts before converting this money into digital currency. Once in digital form, the criminals convert it into cash and assets through the company.

Police have identified two possibilities: Huione Group is based in Cambodia, situated within the scam gang’s territory along the border and within the criminal gang’s area. They may utilize this company to exchange digital currency for cash or transfer money into other accounts. While many cases of online gambling and call center scams have financial routes leading to this company, it cannot be confirmed as unusual since the company is legally established.

Regarding the potential impact of the US blacklisting of the company on the investigation or cyber police surveillance, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong stated the investigation is unaffected. Coordination efforts have been made to request information from various companies, with varying levels of cooperation. Huione Group has sometimes cooperated by providing information, while in other instances, it has not. Whether there is any irregularity or wrongdoing involvement remains undetermined.

In response to inquiries about the company’s ownership by Mr. Hun To, the grandson of Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong could not confirm as investigations are ongoing. He urged the public to remain cautious when following or sharing news, given the current security situation between Thailand and Cambodia, and the increased use of AI programs for creating fake news.
