Jasmine Prices Surge on Mother’s Day, but Farmers Face Year-Round Risks

Bangkok: The Department of Agricultural Extension revealed that jasmine flower prices rose briefly in anticipation of Mother's Day, despite a decrease in production. However, farmers have not received such high prices throughout the year. Therefore, they are accelerating efforts to promote quality production, reduce costs, and expand distribution channels to enhance long-term income security. Mr. Weerasak Boonchuen, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, highlighted that August, especially during Mother's Day week, is the peak period for jasmine flower demand, resulting in a surge in average prices.

According to Thai News Agency, data from 2024/2025 indicates that jasmine flower prices fluctuate seasonally. Between November and February, the average price is 500-1,000 baht/kg, due to low production. Between March and July and September and October, the average price is 200-500 baht/kg. During August, which includes Mother's Day, jasmine flower prices increase for a short period due to higher-than-normal market demand, ensuring fair returns for farmers. The latest Pak Khlong Talat website lists the price of Thai jasmine flowers at 500 baht per 500 grams or 1,000 baht per kilogram.

However, farmers continue to face price volatility and yield uncertainty throughout the year due to inclement weather, plant diseases, and market constraints. Farmer registration data for 2024 indicates that Thailand currently has approximately 929 jasmine farmers, covering a harvesting area of approximately 1,845 rai in key provinces such as Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, and Phichit. The average yield for 2024/2025 is 500-600 kilograms per rai, a decrease of more than 43.59% compared to the previous year, due to disease outbreaks and unfavorable weather conditions for flowering.

The Department of Agricultural Extension has therefore implemented measures to promote both production and sales under the "Testing and Transferring Technology Project to Increase Jasmine Production Productivity" throughout 2025, emphasizing the use of appropriate technologies. These measures include pruning the branches into a square shape to stimulate flowering, using biological substances instead of chemicals for cost reduction and environmental safety, and controlling diseases such as fungi and flower borers. Additionally, the department is promoting practices aligned with sustainable agriculture guidelines.

Farmers are also encouraged to access various markets, such as community markets, specialized markets, Si Mum Muang Market, Pak Khlong Talat Market, and provincial markets to expand sales channels and reduce reliance on middlemen. The department aims to connect production sources directly with destination markets during festivals to ensure fair wholesale prices and provide consumers with high-quality jasmine flowers at reasonable prices.

The Department of Agricultural Extension's long-term goal is to enable farmers to produce and sell jasmine flowers steadily, even without festivals. This strategy aims to ensure jasmine flower prices reflect fair costs and create sustainable income for Thai farmers.
