Bangkok: The government kicks off “WebD”, an AI platform to block illegal websites, cracking down more than 70%, moving forward with technology to protect people from online threats.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, deputy government spokeswoman, revealed that the government, through the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE), is continuously pushing forward the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology under the principles of AI ethical governance. Currently, AI technology has been applied in the process of suppressing the spread and checking access to illegal websites, or the so-called ‘WebD Project’ in the form of a platform.
For the ‘WebD’ platform, it is a platform that accelerates the process of blocking illegal websites, which has more than 100,000 URLs per year, using AI and RPA technologies to search, collect evidence, create paperless court petitions, and automatically send orders to Internet Service Providers (ISPs), with a ‘URLs Checker’ system to continuously monitor blocking.
The platform’s highlight is that it can work 31.5 times faster than officials, reducing the court filing process by 5 business days, and is expected to increase the number of URLs ordered to be blocked by 70.7 percent in 2025 from 2024 (an average of 175 URLs per day).
In addition, ‘WebD’ also has a system for searching and storing evidence of illegal websites (AI Crawler) which is used to examine URLs that are considered illegal (equivalent to the work of 94 officers) before forwarding them to the application system for inspecting/filtering illegal websites and entering the process of submitting petitions to the court (creating petitions to forward to the criminal court via the online system), the process of ordering closure (the system sends court orders to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and the process of adjusting the will, which is the application of AI technology in conjunction with the work of officers.
The use of the WebD platform will help the process of blocking and suspending illegal URLs more efficiently. These illegal websites are a major part of online crimes. The government, through the Ministry of Digital Economy, has given importance to preventing and suppressing technological crimes in order to reduce the impact on the country and its people.
‘The government is committed to using modern technology ethically to create a safe digital society, reduce online threats, and provide comprehensive protection to the public. We are also working hard to solve the problem seriously and continuously so that all citizens can live their lives online with confidence,’ said Ms. Sasikarn.
