Meteorological Department Issues Warning for Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding in Eastern Thailand

Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has alerted residents of the eastern region to brace for heavy rain, which poses risks of flash floods, mudslides, and forest runoff. In addition to this, 70% of Bangkok and its surrounding areas are expected to experience thunderstorms.

According to Thai News Agency, the weather forecast for the next 24 hours indicates that some regions of Thailand will encounter heavy rainfall, with particularly intense rain expected in certain parts of the eastern region. Residents in these areas have been advised to be vigilant against the hazards of heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which could lead to flash floods, forest runoff, and mudslides, especially on hillsides near waterways and lowland areas. This weather pattern is attributed to the moderate southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, as well as a monsoon trough across the upper North and upper Laos, which is entering a low-pressure cell over upper Vietnam.

The department also noted that the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are experiencing moderate waves. The upper Andaman Sea has waves approximately 2 meters high, while the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand have waves ranging from 1 to 2 meters in height. In thunderstorm-prone areas, wave heights exceed 2 meters, prompting sailors in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to navigate cautiously and avoid regions experiencing thunderstorms.

The regional weather forecast reveals that Bangkok and its vicinity will have thunderstorms affecting 70% of the area, with heavy rain in some locations. The northern region is expected to encounter thunderstorms in 70% of the area and heavy rain in certain areas including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Similarly, the northeastern region will see thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with heavy rain in locations like Loei and Nong Khai.

In the central region, thunderstorms are anticipated in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in places such as Lop Buri and Saraburi. The eastern region is forecasted to experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rain in some areas, including Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri. The southern regions, both east coast and west coast, are also expected to face significant thunderstorms and heavy rain, with varying wave heights depending on the location.
