Minister of Education Confirms Delayed Reopening of Schools on Thai-Cambodian Border

Bangkok: The Minister of Education confirmed that schools on the Thai-Cambodian border will not be reopening immediately, stating that security advice must be followed. Education Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat addressed the announcement of school closures in conflict zones along the Thai-Cambodian border, questioning whether classes could resume as usual. She stated that security officials must still adhere to recommendations from the government, which prohibits citizens from returning to areas under surveillance. Therefore, schools must continue to serve as shelters and care for the public.

According to Thai News Agency, regarding some evacuation centers, residents have been told to return home because schools must reopen. Ms. Narumon said she has not yet received any reports of this happening. As she said, she must follow security advice. Regarding schools serving as evacuation centers, she added, “We are not rushing to reopen them. We must also consider the safety of teachers, students, and parents.”

When asked if online learning would be available during the period when schools are still unable to attend, Ms. Narumon stated that online learning is readily available. However, she is unsure how effectively the tools will be used during this unrest, as students will need access to them. Currently, most of the time, the focus is on organizing activities for children in shelters.
