Bangkok: The Ministry of Education has ordered districts in the path of the impending storm Wipha to prepare for potential disruptions, including the immediate closure of schools if necessary. The Ministry of Agriculture is also emphasizing the importance of mitigating impacts on the agricultural sector.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, the deputy government spokesman, disclosed that the Meteorological Department has warned that the severe tropical storm Wipha is expected to weaken into a depression and low-pressure cell. This weather pattern will travel along the monsoon trough, affecting many areas of Thailand, particularly the North, upper Northeast, the west of the Central region, and the East with heavy rains until July 24. Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious of potential flash floods and forest runoff, especially in hillside regions, near waterways, and low-lying areas.
In response, the Minister of Education has instructed educational authorities in the upper northeastern and northern provinces to develop emergency response plans. Schools expected to be affected by the storm are advised to relocate properties to safe areas and ensure the safety of students, teachers, and personnel. Schools in the storm’s path have the discretion to close immediately. Precautionary measures, such as trimming unsafe trees and coordinating with the local Provincial Electricity Authority to cut off electricity in flooded institutions, are also recommended.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has highlighted the need to minimize the storm’s impact on agriculture. Authorities at various administrative levels are tasked with preparing to prevent damage to agricultural products and reduce the impact on farmers in risk-prone areas. Preparatory measures include creating flood risk maps, preparing water pumps and drainage tools, and advising farmers on safeguarding their assets.
During the storm, the Ministry advises quick water drainage from agricultural areas and coordination with local governments for rapid response. Agricultural officials are expected to closely monitor the situation and support farmers.
Mr. Anukul urged citizens to prioritize safety, adhere to government warnings, and follow official advice to minimize potential losses.
