Bangkok: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on Cambodia to reduce tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing the importance of using bilateral mechanisms to resolve current issues. The situation remains calm following Thailand’s implementation of measures to control the opening and closing of border crossings. The Ministry’s spokesperson highlighted that both Thailand and Cambodia are communicating these developments to other countries, stressing the unity between the government and military in upholding state sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorndej Plangoon, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the National Security Council had authorized specific military divisions to manage border control measures. These measures, implemented by the First Army, Second Army, and the Border Defense Command of Chanthaburi and Trat, involve a phased approach to border crossing management, including restricted crossings for necessary activities and potential full closures during crises.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson advised residents near the Thai-Cambodian border to stay informed about the adjustments to border crossing times and requirements. Each crossing will have tailored measures based on regional needs, ensuring the safety of local communities while maintaining essential trade, education, and medical services.
Thailand remains committed to using established bilateral mechanisms, with an upcoming Joint Committee on the Thai-Cambodian Border (JBC) meeting scheduled for June 14. The Ministry emphasized the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary of 2000, advocating for peaceful solutions through mutual respect and cooperation.
During a press conference, Mr. Nikorndet clarified that the border adjustments aim to prioritize people’s security and safety, acknowledging potential impacts on trade while maintaining military and diplomatic efforts to address the situation. He reiterated that both governmental and military entities share a unified approach, prioritizing the interests and sovereignty of Thailand.
Mr. Nikorndet assured that despite the border measures, Thailand intends to employ the JBC mechanism for peaceful resolution, communicating transparently with ASEAN and friendly countries to manage the situation independently, without requiring third-party intervention. He concluded by affirming the ongoing dialogue with interested countries, ensuring accurate information sharing to maintain regional stability.
