Mother’s role crucial in family resilience to tackle pandemic: gov’t

Health Ministry’s spokesperson for COVID-19 Vaccination Siti Nadia Tarmizi expressed belief that a family’s resilience in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic depends on the mother’s role.

“Mothers become the agents of change to strengthen the family’s resilience in surviving the COVID-19 pandemic,” Tarmizi noted during a webinar on Wednesday.

Tarmizi remarked that every mother has a major role in paying attention to family resilience by reminding each member about the health protocols to avoid virus transmission. This major contribution is necessary since the virus may infect everyone.

In this case, a mother has a role to take care of her family by ensuring that health protocols run properly, such as by wearing a mask, washing hands with running water, keeping a distance, reducing mobility, and changing clothes while exiting and entering the house.

It is also important for mothers to protect their children by not taking them to crowded public places, such as malls, Tarmizi added.

“This is because we know that children, especially those under six years of age, have not been vaccinated and engaging in activities in public places is also risky for children,” she emphasized.

Mothers are also expected to care for their family members undergoing self-isolation at home, such as changing sheets or towels used by infected members, to eliminate the likelihood of virus transmission in the house.

In addition to being the supervisors of health protocols in the family, mothers are also the main gateways for disseminating and receiving information on COVID-19 to be delivered to their families, especially children.

Tarmizi is optimistic that mothers would be able to properly filter information from accountable sources.

However, before maintaining the health of the entire family, Tarmizi reminded all mothers to also take care of themselves.

“Before ensuring the health of the family, it is also important for mothers to stay health and safe from COVID-19,” she added.
