MP Jessada Thaiset Criticizes Government for Silencing Debate on Entertainment Complex Act

Bangkok: Mr. Jessada Thaiset, an MP for Uthai Thani from the Bhumjaithai Party, criticized the government for attempting to silence dissenting opinions during discussions on the Entertainment Complex Act draft. He expressed concerns after the House of Representatives decided to withdraw the draft bill from the meeting agenda, thereby cutting off further debate.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jessada, along with other MPs from the Bhumjaithai Party, stated that during the debate process, members from the Pheu Thai Party proposed to end the discussion prematurely. This move was contentious, as issues related to casinos were yet unresolved, and many Bhumjaithai Party MPs had not had the opportunity to voice their opinions.

Mr. Jessada, who identifies as a Muslim, noted that he has always sought to participate in discussions without discrimination. However, the topic of casinos presents personal discomfort for him, prompting him to question the government’s intentions if the bill were to be withdrawn. He emphasized that the Bhumjaithai Party respects the voting rights of members from different religious backgrounds, allowing them to vote according to their conscience. His concern lies not with public opinion but with the moral implications of supporting casino legislation.

Mr. Jessada concluded by asserting that the government’s actions appear to stifle dissent, ignoring the diverse perspectives of those who oppose the bill, regardless of their religious beliefs or individual stances.
