Museums and Monuments Board Temporarily Closes Five Historic Forts for Maintenance

Accra: The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has announced the temporary closure of five historic forts starting December 18, 2025. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

According to Ghana News Agency, the forts affected by this decision include Fort Apollonia in Benyin, Fort St. Anthony in Axim, Fort Orange in Sekondi, James Fort in Jamestown, and Ussher Fort in Usshertown. The closure is necessary to facilitate maintenance work, conduct safety assessments, and carry out ongoing conservation activities. These efforts are aimed at preserving both the structural integrity and historical value of these important heritage sites.

A statement from Kwesi Essel-Blankson, Acting Executive Director of the GMMB, emphasized the importance of these maintenance activities. It expressed regret for any inconvenience the closures might cause and appealed for public cooperation. The statement read, "We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused and appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the public as we work to ensure that the forts are made safe for continued public access."

The GMMB assured the public that further updates regarding the forts would be communicated in due course. For any inquiries, individuals are encouraged to contact the GMMB at 0303944030 or 0303944028.
