NBTC and Telecom Providers Collaborate on “Half-Half Net” Project to Ease Internet Costs

Bangkok: The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has initiated talks with telecommunications service providers to align with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society’s policy of introducing “Half-Half Net” packages aimed at alleviating the financial burden on citizens. The NBTC has also sought collaboration in promoting the transition to 4G-5G-compatible smartphones as part of the “Half-Half Plus” program.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Trirat Wiriyasirikul, Acting Secretary-General of the NBTC, announced the commission’s readiness to back the government’s initiative to launch the “Half-Half Net” project. This project aims to reduce internet expenses for the public by developing a monthly internet package priced at 160 baht (including VAT), with the government footing half of the cost and citizens covering the rest.

The initiative will initially be extended to state welfare cardholders, enhancing their access to essential digital services. The package, which provides 40 GB of internet at 512 Kbps per month over three billing cycles, is set to roll out once it receives Cabinet approval. It will be available as an add-on for both prepaid and postpaid plans, as the “Half-Half Plus” program necessitates smartphone use for payment transactions.

Simultaneously, NBTC is urging telecom providers to offer affordable promotions for consumers to upgrade to 4G/5G-compatible smartphones. This would facilitate public participation in the project and support the use of internet networks for activities such as online courses and digital skills development, potentially boosting economic opportunities for individuals.

This initiative is in line with the broader telecommunications technology transition from 3G to 4G and 5G, aimed at improving network quality and long-term connectivity across Thailand. It is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the digital economy and ensuring universal technological access within Thai society.
