NBTC Prepares to Inspect Thai-Cambodian Border Signals, Prohibits Cross-Border Transmission

Bangkok: The NBTC Secretary-General is closely monitoring measures to address issues related to SIM cards, cables, and poles, mandating telecommunication operators to report information on foreign legal entity contracts. Preparations are underway to inspect signals along the Thai-Cambodian border, with a strict prohibition on signal crossing.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Trirat Viriyasirikul, Deputy Secretary-General and Acting Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), announced that the NBTC is ready to support government policies aimed at combating transnational crimes, particularly technology crimes linked to border areas. Following a recent meeting led by the Prime Minister, which included security agencies and the NBTC, measures for managing telecommunications infrastructure were discussed and conveyed to telecommunications licensees.

SIM card measures include coordination with the Customs Department to prevent the export of Thai SIM cards and the collection of data on SIM registrations in border areas. Telecommunication business licensees with overseas connection points on the Thai-Cambodian border are required to report contract details involving foreign entities and the specifics of their telecommunications usage. Network connections to Cambodia, which have been suspended, must not be resumed without notifying the NBTC for assessment.

NBTC officials will inspect areas along the Thai-Cambodian border, including Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, Trat, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram provinces, to control telephone and internet signals, ensuring they do not cross into Cambodian territory. Telecommunication service providers are urged to address the issue urgently to help combat call center scams.

Mr. Trirat emphasized the NBTC’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies and border forces to enhance communication support in the region. He stated that telecommunication operators intending to connect signals to Cambodia must provide detailed business and service information for rigorous NBTC inspection. The issue of call center scams, a significant transnational crime, affects the economy and society, and the NBTC is dedicated to working with the government to tackle technology crimes swiftly.

Currently, 14 telecommunications business licensees operate networks with international connection points on the Thai-Cambodian border, including National Telecom Public Company Limited, Advanced Wireless Network Company Limited, and True Move H Universal Communication Company Limited, among others. All international network connections to Cambodia have been halted.
