Negotiation Results: ‘Thai-Cambodian Army’ Withdraws Troops from Conflict Zone

Surin: Revealed the results of the negotiations between the Thai and Cambodian Army Commanders, able to reach an agreement to withdraw troops from the conflict area, along with using the JBC mechanism at the government level to urgently solve problems in the border area. Major General Winthai Suvari, Army spokesman, revealed that today (29 May 2025) at 3:30 p.m., General Pana Klaewplodthuk, Army Commander, and his team traveled to the Chong Chom permanent border crossing in Dan Subdistrict, Kap Choeng District, Surin Province, to meet and discuss with General Mau Sophan, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, and the Cambodian team on the issue of the situation in the border area. Today’s meeting was a continuation of the negotiations after the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army and the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army spoke via the VTC system yesterday (28 May 2025).

According to Thai News Agency, the army commander expressed his condolences for the loss of personnel from the clashes and emphasized the importance of the intentions of the defense ministers of both countries to negotiate to end the conflict. He also expressed his support for peaceful negotiations to find a mutual agreement and confirmed that there would be no invasion of Cambodia’s sovereignty or raising issues of conflict over sovereignty. This negotiation will benefit the people of both countries, especially in terms of economy.

In the case of the conflict at Chong Bok, the Thai and Cambodian armies have agreed to use the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) mechanism, which is a government-level mechanism to urgently resolve the issue. The results of the JBC meeting are expected to conclude within another 2 weeks. Currently, the forces from both sides that clashed have moved out of the area, which is considered a resolution of tension between each other. Both sides also agreed to use the Regional Border Committee (RBC) mechanism to resolve any remaining doubts and to promote the JBC mechanism to be more complete.

In addition, commanders from both sides stated that they will strictly supervise their troops within the framework of negotiations. The Cambodian Army Commander emphasized that if anyone violates the agreement that was jointly agreed upon today, they will immediately move their troops out of the area. He confirmed that the Cambodian side can decisively control and command all units.

The negotiations between the Thai and Cambodian army commanders this time had a good atmosphere. They were able to reach an agreement to withdraw their troops from the conflict area and remain in their original location, waiting for the results of the JBC meeting. In the meantime, the commanders of both sides will supervise their troops to strictly follow the negotiation framework. The army will continue to closely monitor the situation in the border area and prepare for various operations to maintain peace and order in the border area.
