Operation Naree Phikhat: Arrest and Investigation of “Ms. Golf” Unveils Massive Financial Misconduct

Bangkok: The Central Investigation Bureau has announced the successful arrest of “Ms. Golf” and is set to expand the investigation into a significant money trail linked to gambling websites. This operation, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Charoonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, also involves several high-ranking officials from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and other agencies.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Wilawan, also known as Ms. Golf, was apprehended at her residence in Nonthaburi Province on July 15, 2025. She faces three serious charges: supporting an official in performing his duties improperly, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering. The arrest follows an investigation that revealed a turnover of 385 million baht in her bank account over the past three years, with only 8,000 baht remaining. A significant portion of these funds was transferred to gambling websites.

The investigation extends to Mr. Sompong, the former abbot of Wat Chujittharam, who is accused of misappropriating temple funds. The police discovered that money from Wat Chujittharam was transferred to Ms. Golf’s account, indicating a web of corruption involving several religious figures. Nine out of thirteen monks involved in the scandal have disrobed following the revelations.

Pol. Lt. Col. Siripong Sritula, Assistant Secretary-General of the NACC, emphasized the operation’s significance, noting that it stems from a policy initiated by the national police chief on June 18. This policy aimed to address issues of corruption and misconduct within religious institutions.

The operation has highlighted the involvement of numerous monks and laypersons in financial misconduct, with many implicated in extortion and blackmail schemes. The evidence gathered includes numerous clips and messages used to extort money. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities committed to prosecuting all parties involved.

The arrest and subsequent investigation have sparked a broader discussion about the integrity of religious institutions and the need for reform. Mr. Phumiwisan Kasemsuk, Secretary-General of the NACC, called for modernizing outdated laws and maintaining faith in the positive contributions of monks while addressing misconduct.

Authorities are urging victims and those with information to come forward as the investigation progresses. The Central Investigation Bureau has also opened a Facebook page to receive reports of inappropriate behavior by monks, emphasizing that no one will be exempt from scrutiny.

The unfolding scandal has prompted a thorough review of financial activities across multiple temples, with investigations set to continue. The authorities are determined to address the misconduct and restore public confidence in religious institutions.
